060125: Topologically Controlled Composite Materials with High Energy Absorption Capability

Description:
Conventional fiber composites are prone to severe delamination, cracking, and fiber breakage upon projectile impact. This lack of toughness is a critical limitation on the possible uses of the composite.

Description

The technology describes the formation of a composite structure using a variety of fiber configurations that provide increased fiber bridging and improved toughness. This effects a doubling of energy absorption capability which allows the material to withstand a projectile impact far better than existing materials.

Benefits

  • Usability: Due to its superior impact resistance this material can be utilized for many applications for which commercially available composites cannot be used.
  • Versatility: The light, tough composite material can be formed into curved and thin shapes greatly enhancing possible uses.

Applications

Applications exist in many areas where continuous fiber reinforced structures are used such as aircraft manufacturers, military supplies (armor, equipment, etc.), boat/ship builders, automotive industry, sporting goods industry and the suppliers of materials to those industries.
